You can’t have an Amazon affiliate website without having Amazon affiliate links right! Now we have posts and categories sorted on our site, I’m sure you’re eager to add some affiliate links too.
Amazon make it really simple for associate partners to grab their links, they have quite a few link generators set up in the associates centre.
Types Of Amazon Affiliate Links
If you hover your mouse over the drop down box you’ll see that more options become available to you. You will also see that I have the tracking ID roomfans-20 selected, that means that all the affiliate links I generate will have my Amazon tracking ID already embedded.
One thing to remember when adding amazon links is that you must do it in the text editor not the visual editor…
Using the link generators at Amazon is quite a simple affair, As I’ll show you in videos below.
First, I want to tell you about the different types of hyperlinks that Amazon provides. I’ll use the different kinds of links for the blue Dyson hot & cold fan heater,
Product Links
Using the product links tab lets you perform a simple search for anything that Amazon sell. I just entered ‘blue Dyson fan’ into the box that allows me to search via: keyword or ASIN/ISBN. Clicking on the ‘get link’ orange button takes me to a page where I can customize the type of link I want to use.
We choose the ‘offer listings’ or the ‘product details’ page. I always go to the details page it creates a much tighter connection to the post.
Text and Image
Most people opt to use this type of product link from Amazon on their websites. It’s very recognisable, trusted and you have some good options at the creation stage. You can build this type of link without a border, change colors of elements and choose to have it open in a new window.
Text Links
Just as the name implies, we can add links as text within our posts. This is a great way to get a reader to click on an emotional driven phrase. When you choose the ‘text link’ tab there will already be a suggestion of what your link will say. If you don’t want to use the suggestion, you can change the phrase before you generate the link.
Image Only
The image only tab allows us to make links to amazon products using … you guessed it, the product image. The options are direct readers to the detailed or product listings as always, with the added option of showing a small, medium or large image.
Widget Links
The last tab you see when customizing your html for product links is to add the product to a widget. This has a few more steps but is as equally easy to use. The first option is whether to show a box of your favourite items or a slide show. The sizes of the boxes differ depending on what you choose, so take a look at both options. You can pick from a few color options, and add more than one product… as you can see!
Banner Links are another easy way to link to Amazon. Unlike the previous examples banner links send readers to product categories. There are plenty of categories to choose from and even a few rotating ones from the larger and best selling categories.
Creating a banner is as simple on clicking on the text, that will take you to a page where you can view all the available banners for that category.
NB: not all categories have a wide range of banner sizes, which is a bit of a shame.
Widgets – yep widgets again, but this time the Amazon widget collection is what we’re going to look at. Amazon have search boxes to MP3 players it’s well worth a good peek.
As I write this there are 15 different types of widget available, and new one added or tested every now and again. Adding to the widgets you select is a straightforward process that’s very similar to what you see me do in the video above.
Promotion Links
The last type of Amazon link generator I’m going to talk about in this post is the very underutilized promotions hub. (There are other ways to link to Amazon products that I’ll show on another post.) Here Amazon have put together a list of events and special offers to give you a simple way to take advantage of promotions across their store.
You can search for seasonal offers, best sellers, deals, ongoing themes, and product trends to help you maximize your affiliate earnings.
Short Amazon Affiliate Links
There’s one particular type of amazon link generator that isn’t actually linked to the associates website that I use fairly often.
It’s a bookmarklet that I found on Stoyan Stefanov’s phpied.com and it’s a real time saver. I just click on a bookmark on my browser toolbar and hey presto instant affiliate links.
Fancy trying it? >> Drag the link below to your bookmarks or right-click and add to your favorites. Then right click the new bookmark and change its properties, replacing the Amazon ID “roomfans-20” with your own.
After installing the bookmarklet, when on a product page at Amazon.com click the bookmarket and create a new affiliate short link. It’s as simple as that.
Adding Amazon Links To WordPress
Now we know how to get our links, the next step is to add it to our wordpress posts, pages or widgets. There’s a couple of things that will make your life a lot easier – especially if all this is new to you.
Add Your links in text mode – The links that are generated in the Amazon associates centre are what I call raw html links. They are full of code that you have to paste into your website with your editor in text mode. The tab to change editor modes is visible when using the post or page editor.
